Metal Workshop Safety Simulation: Find 9 Hazards

This is a metal workshop safety simulation you can walk around. It looks like a modern game: a welding bay, a lathe, a milling machine, a gantry crane, a forge and a grinder, with people at work. Your job is to find the 9 hazards, from the unguarded lathe chuck to the man holding hot metal in his bare hands.
Play Metal Workshop (Hyper-real)
What makes this version different
The hall, the machines and the people are modelled in detail, with the concrete and the roof sheeting scanned from real surfaces and the light of the strip lamps baked into every corner. It opens on a light version so it starts quickly on a phone; the ? button in the game loads high detail (12 MB). It runs in your browser and takes 2 free minutes on each game, no sign-up.
What you will practise
Grinding, welding fumes, heavy lifting, hot surfaces and moving machinery.
How to play
- On a phone or tablet: your left thumb walks, a drag anywhere else looks around, and a tap identifies.
- On a computer: W, A, S and D walk, dragging the mouse looks around, and a click identifies.
- Keyboard only: the arrow keys walk and turn, Page Up and Page Down look up and down, and Enter identifies whatever is in the centre circle.
Use it with your team
- As a group: put one game on a projector or a TV. One person walks, and the group calls out what they see.
- One each: send the link to everyone’s phone. Each person plays alone, then compare scores and the hazards people missed.
- Talk it through: the end screen lists every missed hazard. Ask the team which of them you have on your own site, and who will fix it.
- On paper: ten of the games come with a PDF and a PowerPoint of the picture with the answers, linked under each game above.
If you run safety for a team, POLLE Safety is free web software for Permit to Work, Toolbox Talks, Safety Committee and Spot the Hazard 3D: free, every module, no card, no caps. Try it.
The 9 hazards
Try the game first. The list below gives the game away.
Show the answers: try the game first
- Risk of Back Injury due to heavy lifting. Use Material Handling Equipment like Trolleys to move heavy objects
- Risk of trip and fall. Always walk only in the designated pathways. Make sure you focus only on the path ahead while walking
- Use eye protection glasses while doing grinding as flying sparks may hurt your eyes
- Exerting excessive force may cause back muscle sprain. Use powered tools/ wrenches to loosen the tight screws. Also standing on a small platform to do operation increases the risk of falling.
- As the working bench is at lower height the person doing the activity will strain his neck muscles by looking down.
- Use of Safety helmet is a must while working directly below a suspended load or lifting equipment.
- Exhaust suction needs to be directly over the welding area for being effective or the person working will inhale the hazardous smoke generated.
- Exposure to moving machinery. All rotating/ moving parts need to be guarded to prevent risk of injury.
- Exposure hot surfaces. Use Heat resistant gloves when doing the operation.
